Paul  Theerman,  PhD

Paul Theerman, PhD, serves as Director of the Academy Library and Center for the History of Medicine and Public Health. Dr. Theerman oversees library operations, including collection development, cataloging, preservation and conservation, digitization, user services, and public engagement and programming. Between 1998 and 2013, Dr. Theerman served as Head of the Section on Images and Archives in the History of Medicine Division of the National Library of Medicine, Bethesda, Maryland, overseeing operations in manuscripts, archives, prints and photographs, and historic audiovisuals. Previously he held positions in the Smithsonian Institution Archives and on the Joseph Henry Papers project at the Smithsonian, and as “humanist-in-residence” at Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry. Dr. Theerman holds a PhD in the history of science from the University of Chicago and teaches the history of public health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
