Director of Philanthropy & Partnerships, Development
Megan Smith will join The New York Academy of Medicine as Director of Philanthropy and Partnerships on April 8, 2024, bringing a decade of professional experience in strategic communications and institutional philanthropy.
Megan joins NYAM from Overlook Foundation, the fundraising arm of Overlook Medical Center—a nonprofit, 513-bed community hospital in Summit, NJ—where she served as Officer of Corporate and Foundation Relations. During her time at Overlook, Megan managed a dedicated portfolio of private grantmakers, forging trusted relationships with new and existing partners alike to support a range of clinical programs and capital needs. Her career as a fundraiser began at St. Joseph’s Health, an independent, mission-driven healthcare system whose flagship facility serves as the only hospital in Paterson, NJ—a high-need urban community and the state’s third most populous city. As Development Coordinator, she led a full range of development and communications activities to enhance strategic fundraising objectives. In addition to securing dozens of private contributions, Megan was instrumental in growing St. Joseph’s public funding portfolio, winning state and federal grants for community-based health initiatives.
Before pursuing her path in health-focused philanthropy, Megan spent several years in New York City as a Marketing Assistant and Associate Marketing Manager for Routledge (an imprint of the academic publishing house Taylor & Francis Group). Megan earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Seton Hall University. She resides in Northern New Jersey.
