New York, NY (April 10, 2026)—New York Academy of Medicine (NYAM) is hosting its premier annual urology event, the Ferdinand C. Valentine Lecture and Award, on Wednesday, April 15, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. This year’s Valentine Award recipient is Joel Sheinfeld, MD, the Florence and Theodore Baumritter/Enid Ancell Chair in Urologic Oncology, the deputy chief and program director of Urology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC).
The Valentine Award was established in 1961 to honor the late Dr. Ferdinand Valentine, who was a founder of the American Urological Association and a NYAM Fellow since 1896. Dr. Valentine’s family initiated the award and lectureship that is his namesake. Jeffrey P. Weiss, MD, PhD, FACS, professor & chairman, SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, Department of Urology, and NYAM Valentine Committee Member, said Dr. Sheinfeld is a generous teacher and leader who deserves the Valentine Award.
“Dr. Sheinfeld is a rare giant in the annals of urological surgery. His surgical expertise is second to none, in the context of the monumental work for surgical remediation of young men with testicular cancer,” Dr. Weiss told NYAM. “He has mentored hundreds of influential urology trainees in addition to nearly 100 uro-oncologists as director of the uro-oncology fellowship at MSKCC, a pivotal leadership role which he assumed more than 30 years ago. The value of Dr. Sheinfeld’s personal counsel to (collaborate with) academic colleagues is incalculable.”
As a urologic surgeon, Dr. Sheinfeld will give a presentation about his journey in urology, titled, “Late Relapse of Testicular Cancerand the Vulnerable Retroperitoneum.” He has demonstrated his expertise of urology across over 350 co-authored papers, chapters, and editorials on testicular cancer, and has performed around 3,000 retroperitoneal lymph node dissections (a testicular cancer surgery implemented when the disease spreads to the lymph nodes). Dr. Sheinfeld’s expertise and decades of leadership in urology are a testament to his dedication to empower others to live healthier, longer lives.
