On November 29, we held our annual Celebration of the Library for friends, donors, researchers, historians and fans of our incredible and historic Library. In recognition of World AIDS Day on December 1 and acknowledging the momentous loss and impact of HIV and AIDS on public health, we’re honored to display a selection of the AIDS Memorial Quilt, along with exhibits of some treasures within our walls, including vintage posters, postcards, buttons, and other materials created in response to the AIDS epidemic.
Library Director Dr. Paul Theerman was joined by the former Director of NYAM’s Center for Urban Epidemiologic Studies Dr. David Vlahov, who shared his experiences leading NYAM’s important HIV/AIDS research and community outreach during the 1990s and early 2000s. We also thank our guests for sharing their own experiences during this chilling time and for their dedication to addressing pain and suffering during the early years of the AIDS epidemic. In closing, NYAM President Dr. Ann Kurth thanked the many supporters who join us in celebrating the history of medicine and the importance of NYAM’s collections in its preservation. She also reminded us of the important role that the AIDS patients, survivors and community played in advocating for and propelling healthcare advancements.
The AIDS quilt will remain on display at NYAM through the month of December.
