Advancing health equity is a significant undertaking that can’t be addressed by healthcare alone. It requires that we take a collaborative approach that integrates health considerations into policymaking across sectors—such as housing, transportation, education, and more—to remove barriers and ensure that everyone has access to what they need to be healthy and live their best life. NYAM is a trusted partner to New York City and State agencies in working to ensure that health is considered and incorporated across policies and programs.

Health Data for New York City (HD4NYC)
Through HD4NYC—an innovative and collaborative effort—we’re working to advance health equity research and policy change in NYC. In partnership with the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, this first-of-its-kind program facilitates access to Health Department data for a multidisciplinary group of researchers and mentors from academic institutions, the Health Department, and NYAM to generate research that can inform policies and programs addressing health disparities.

Health and Age Across All Policies
In 2018, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo issued an executive order requiring state entities to consider health and aging across all planning, policy and procurement decisions. Working collaboratively with New York State, we developed and launched the award-winning Health Across All Policies initiative and are providing technical assistance to 16 counties across the state as they work to incorporate health and age-friendly principles into their policies and programs.

Since 2013, NYAM has been an active contributor to shaping and providing technical assistance for implementation of the New York State Prevention Agenda. The Advancing Prevention Project (APP), which ran through 2018, was an innovative training and technical assistance program that supported local-level implementation by building the capacity of local health departments and hospitals to carry out their Prevention Agenda plans.

Designing a Strong and Healthy NYC (DASH-NYC)
NYAM partnered with the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to investigate and spread community-based approaches to promoting health and health equity. We co-led the Designing a Strong and Healthy New York City (DASH-NYC) Workgroup, engaging partners from multiple sectors and incorporating a health across all policies approach to chronic disease prevention activities throughout NYC. DASH-NYC publications include a guide for NYC health care providers looking to connect their patients with healthy housing resources.
