For almost 180 years, New York Academy of Medicine has led efforts to advance health equity, health innovation, and community centered‑research. The Senior Scholars Program engages distinguished leaders across population health, medicine, science, technology, government, and the arts who bring vision, expertise, and a deep commitment to equity.
Why Apply
Population health and medicine face urgent challenges—from climate change and emerging infectious diseases to widening inequities and systemic barriers to care. Senior Scholars help meet this moment by:
- Driving innovation through research and thought leadership
- Mentoring and sponsoring the next generation of health leaders
- Collaborating across disciplines to inform policy and practice
- Contributing to NYAM convenings, publications, and community initiatives
What Senior Scholars Do
Senior Scholars participate flexibly in NYAM’s intellectual life, which may include:
- Mentorship, seminars, and public programs
- Writing, publishing, and knowledge translation
- Narrative health, systems change, networking, and policy engagement.
The Scholars may convene on a quarterly basis to discuss ongoing progress and to provide thought leadership.
Program Structure
- Term: Appointments are made for a two-year term with the possibility of renewal based on contributions and institutional priorities.
- Expenses: While the position does not include a stipend, reasonable expenses such as travel and related costs may be reimbursed in accordance with NYAM’s policies.
- Engagement: This honorary position upholds NYAM’s policies on communications, fundraising, and conflicts of interest.
- Community & Resources: Access to New York Academy of Medicine’s historic Library (on‑site and digital), convenings, collaborations with staff and Fellows, and a vibrant network of peers.
Who Should Apply
We welcome accomplished leaders known for scholarship, mentorship, and impact — especially those whose work advances health equity. Expertise aligned with priority areas (e.g., climate change, artificial intelligence and data systems, maternal and child health, adult wellness, healthy aging, community engaged‑ research, and narrative health) is highly encouraged.
