The asthma program of Little Sisters of the Assumption Family Health Service, a partner of NYAM’s Center for Evaluation and Applied Research (CEAR), was highlighted on Dateline NBC’s “Breathless” segment on Sunday, January 5, 2014. The program (“Controlling Asthma through Home Remediation” or “CAHR”) addresses environmental conditions in East Harlem public housing that can trigger or exacerbate asthma symptoms in children. The program is delivered by community health workers and includes home remediation services, hands-on caregiver training, and ongoing support for cleaning and integrated pest management.

The CEAR team is currently conducting an evaluation of the CAHR program. CEAR’s findings suggest fewer asthma symptoms, fewer missed school days, and noticeable reductions in indoor asthma triggers, including mold, cockroaches, and mice.
