The NYAM Library began in January 1847 with the founding of the Academy. By the middle of the 20th century it had grown to be one of the largest medical libraries in the country. Building on its extensive historical collections, in the early 21st century the Library shifted its focus to history of medicine and public health and developed its online presence through digital collections and exhibits.
