The Library is committed to training future generations and welcoming all who wish to support our mission. To that end, we offer a range of internship and volunteer opportunities.

Fellowships

The Library supports two research Fellowships for scholars-in-residence. The Paul Klemperer Fellowship in the History of Medicine supports research using Library resources for scholarly study in the history of medicine. The Audrey and William H. Helfand Fellowship in the History of Medicine and Public Health supports research using Library resources for scholarly study in the history of medicine and public health with an emphasis on visual culture.

Internships

From time to time, the Library welcomes internship applications from current students and recent graduates in library and information science. When internships are available, calls for applications will be shared through library listservs and our own social media channels. Preference is given to those who wish to pursue careers in special collections librarianship and to those with previous experience working or interning in a library. We can offer an internship for class credit and/or a stipend, depending on individual program requirements.

Intern projects may include working on public engagement events, writing posts for the Library blog, Books, Health, and History, producing bibliographies on specific research topics, processing an archival collection, and rehousing collection materials. In addition to completing a specific project, interns will be introduced to a range of special collections library functions.

Volunteering

Volunteering opportunities may be available with the Library for those who are interested in supporting libraries or pursuing a library-based career. Experience working in libraries is a plus. Opportunities include working on the collections, in digitization, and in social media. To express interest, please contact library@nyam.org
