Library Services
The New York Academy of Medicine Library offers a number of services to help you with your research, including document delivery and interlibrary loan, corporate research services, reproduction and imaging, and services for NYAM Fellows.
Reference librarians are available to assist patrons who visit the Library with research.
For general reference research questions, please use our Ask a Librarian service.
In-depth research services are available for a fee. Research costs are $100 per hour (minimum of $50 for 1/2 hour), plus any additional costs (online charges, long distance telephone calls, documents, extensive reference intake interviews). Research services include online searching, World Wide Web searching, examinations of books, journal articles, paper indices for pertinent data, illustrations, etc.
The Document Delivery Department provides a variety of users with access to articles/chapters from the Library’s journal and book collection.
Your document needs can be quickly filled using the Library’s outstanding biomedical and public health resources of over 550,000 volumes and many serial titles. Whether you need a medical research journal article, medical illustration, conference proceeding, excerpt from a book, or any other type of document, we can get it to you. The New York Academy of Medicine is copyright compliant, through the Transactional Reporting Service of the Copyright Clearance Center.

General Public
Members of the general public may request copies of collection materials through our reproduction and imaging services (see below for more information.) The Library’s Document Delivery Department supplies copies of journal articles or book chapters when larger numbers of articles are requested or when materials are only found in other libraries.
Please note: Books are not available for loan to the general public.
Requests must be emailed, faxed, or mailed. Please use our Document Request Form (PDF) and return by email to [email protected], fax to (212) 722-7650, or mail to the address on the form. We will provide an estimate of availability and cost and, after your approval, will fill your request using the Library’s collections or through Interlibrary Loan. The cost for obtaining materials is our fee plus any copyright charge as assigned by the Copyright Clearance Center.

Other Libraries
The Library is a participating member of the Docline and OCLC systems, for borrowing and loans. Requests should be sent and received via the specific system(s). For libraries that are not a participating member of either of those systems, kindly contact the Document Delivery Department directly, for services, procedures, and pricing.
Corporate Research Services is the New York Academy of Medicine Library’s information and document delivery service for the business and nonprofit communities.

The Corporate Research Services program provides your organization with immediate access to the Library’s research, clinical, biomedical and historical collections, one of the largest medical collections in the country. Corporate Research Services information specialists will respond to your research queries or supply you with needed documents.
Document Delivery Services

Whether you need a medical research journal article, medical illustration, conference proceeding, excerpt from a book, or any other type of document, we can get it to you. Research Services
Corporate Research Services has the resources and staff expertise to assist you in finding the medical information you need. If you need the most recent medical research related to a specific disease, or require epidemiology statistics, clinical trial protocols, or current ICD-9 codes, we can assist you. A phone call, fax, or email to Corporate Research Services puts you in touch with the latest medical and public health information available.
Our resources include the National Library of Medicine’s family of databases, subscription-based subject specific databases, scholarly medical science texts and journals, and history of medicine books and illustrations. Quick information or in-depth research will be provided. Information specialists work closely with clients to serve their information needs quickly, cost efficiently, and confidentially.

Corporate Client Rates
A non-refundable annual fee of $1,650 for all for-profit organizations is required to open an account. The annual fee for not-for-profit organizations is $825. Clients who join during the year will pay an annual fee prorated at $140 per month ($70 for not-for-profits). Billing is on a monthly basis.
Document Costs
Articles/chapters are $25 (cost recovery only). There is an additional charge of $10 for mailing a physical copy. The copyright fee as set by the Copyright Clearance Center, is charged in addition to Library document fees.
Turn-around times for client requests are for items available in the New York Academy of Medicine Library. For items that are not in the Library (interlibrary loan), the turn-around time will be longer. The Document Delivery staff will research your order and advise you of the price and time involved for the interlibrary loan request.
Non-Library items (interlibrary loans) are regular document price, plus cost (recovery only) incurred by the Library as a result of obtaining material from another institution, and the copyright fee as assigned by the Copyright Clearance Center. Copyright fees are assigned in addition to Library ILL fees. Canceled orders may incur a fee if processing was done prior to cancellation. Materials from the Special Collections, or materials considered to be too fragile for regular photocopying, are not included in the above. (Call for pricing.)
Research Costs
Research costs are $90 per hour (minimum of $45 for 1/2 hour), plus any additional costs (online charges, long distance telephone calls, documents, extensive reference intake interviews). Clients may borrow ten books at any one time, for a period of one month. No reference materials or journals may be borrowed.

The Library provides digital reproductions of images from the collections for a fee.
All images are provided for personal research use only unless accompanied by a written request for permission to publish. Researchers may request permission to photograph items from the collections for their own personal use. All photography takes place in the Drs. Barry and Bobbi Coller Rare Book Reading Room using natural light only.
The Historical Collections Librarian makes digital images in a variety of formats for readers’ personal use or for use in publications. Inquire for the current fee structure.
The New York Academy of Medicine Library offers a wide variety of special services to NYAM Fellows and Members.
Research Services
Fellows and Members are given, at no charge, up to two hours of in-depth reference assistance annually. A question is considered in-depth if it takes more than 15 minutes of staff time to be resolved. An in-depth request could include a complicated bibliographic verification or searching of detailed biographical and historical materials from the collection.
Fellows and Members requesting additional hours of in-depth assistance will be charged at the rate of $80 per hour (minimum $40 for 1/2 hour). Fees for staff time will only be charged if the Fellow or Member has gone beyond their two hours of free research time.

Document Delivery Services
Fellows and Members may order 25 articles a year at no charge, at a maximum length of 50 pages per article. Additional articles will cost $10.00 apiece, unless obtained onsite. Fellows and Members visiting the Library can take advantage of our photocopying services at the regular rate of $.25 per page.
Materials obtained from other institutions through interlibrary loan cost $35 per article for a rush delivery (1-3 days) and $25 per article for a 5-7 day delivery. There is an additional charge of $10 for mailing of a physical copy.

Borrowing Materials
Fellows and Members in good standing may borrow books from the Library collection for a period of four weeks, renewable for an additional four weeks, subject to items being in a suitable condition for loan.
Visiting the Library
Fellows and Members must make an appointment to use the Library. Please contact us before coming to use the Drs. Barry and Bobbi Coller Rare Book Reading Room during regular hours so we can be sure someone will be available for assistance. The rare book room may sometimes be unavailable because of other scheduled events in the space.
While visiting the Library, Fellows have access to electronic journals and databases.
