Applications for Fellowship and Membership are subject to a rigorous review and approval process.
All nominations for Fellowship and Membership are first reviewed by the Committee on Admission and Membership of the Academy. The Committee submits its recommendations to the Board of Trustees for final approval and election to the Academy. Fellows and Members are accepted on a quarterly basis throughout the year and formally inducted at the Annual Meeting of the Fellows each November.
Become a Fellow
Professionals who have completed their graduate training or have completed graduate education and certifications as appropriate to their health care related field including, but not limited to, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, public administration, nursing, social work and public health for at least 10 years are eligible for Fellowship. They shall show evidence of strong performance in one or several of the health professional's roles of practitioner, teacher, scientist, researcher, administrator or citizen. This shall be evidenced by such criteria as specialty certification, involvement in professional organizations and outstanding potential for clinical, administrative, teaching, administrative, or research contributions to the health-related fields.
Candidates for Fellowship must be proposed by a Fellow of the Academy and seconded by one additional Fellow. It is strongly encouraged that at least one letter come from outside the organization.
Fellowship in the Academy is an honor, given the high level of achievement of the Fellows and carries the responsibility to become involved in furthering the Academy's mission.

Become a Member
Professionals who have completed their graduate training or completed graduate education and certifications appropriate to their healthcare-related field are eligible for Membership. These include medical residents, post-residency fellows, graduate students, and master’s degree recipients in fields including medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, public administration, nursing, social work, and public health. They shall show evidence of performance or outstanding potential in one or several of the health professional’s roles of practitioner, teacher, scientist, researcher, administrator, or citizen. Such criteria shall evidence this as specialty certification, involvement in professional organizations, and outstanding potential for clinical, administrative, teaching, administrative, or research contributions to the health-related professions.
All candidates for Membership must show evidence of personal integrity and evidence of their commitment to NYAM’s mission.
Candidates for Membership must be proposed by a Fellow or Member of the Academy.
Membership provides an opportunity for health professionals to become more involved in NYAM’s work on issues related to health equity.

Become a Student Member
Graduate students in health-related fields including, but not limited to, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, public administration, nursing, social work and public health, are eligible to apply for Student Membership in The New York Academy of Medicine.
Candidates for Student Membership should have clear potential for the pursuit of distinguished careers in health, medicine, health science, or related areas, particularly in affiliation with a college, university, hospital, community organization, or recognized institution engaged in such work. Applying to become a Student Member requires the completion of the online application and a letter from the student's school confirming that they are a current student in good standing. Often the letter comes from the Office of the Registrar.
Selection as a Student Member provides a unique opportunity for aspiring health professionals to become more involved in issues relevant to the health of the public.
