About the Moderator

Suzanne Bakken, RN, PhD, FAAN, FACMI, is the Alumni Professor of Nursing and Professor of Biomedical Informatics at Columbia University. Following doctoral study in nursing at the University of California, San Francisco, she completed a National Library of Medicine post-doctoral fellowship in Medical Informatics at Stanford University. The goal of Dr. Bakken’s program of research is to promote health and reduce health disparities in underserved populations through application of innovative informatics methods. She currently directs the Precision Approaches in Symptom Self-Management (PriSSM) Center and the Reducing Health Disparities Through Informatics (RHeaDI) pre- and post-doctoral training program; both funded by the National Institute of Nursing Research. She has also received funding from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, National Cancer Institute, National Institute of Mental Health, and the National Library of Medicine. She also currently serves as the Co-Chair of the Health Analytics Center of Columbia’s Data Science Institute.  Dr. Bakken has published more than 200 peer-reviewed papers. In 2010, she received the Pathfinder Award from the Friends of the National Institute of Nursing Research. She is an elected fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine, American Academy of Nursing, American College of Medical Informatics, and a member of the National Academy of Medicine.

About the Panelists

Fernando Martin-Sanchez PhD, FACHI, FACMI, CHIA, is a Faculty Member at the Division of Health Informatics at Weill Cornell Medicine. Prior to this, he was the Chair of Health Informatics at the Melbourne Medical School and Director of the Health and Biomedical Informatics Centre (HaBIC) at the University of Melbourne.  He holds PhDs in Informatics and Medicine; MSs in Knowledge Engineering and Molecular Biology and a BSc in Biochemistry. He has worked in the Joint Program in Biomedical Engineering between Emory University Hospital and Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta USA, and in the National Institute of Health Carlos III in Madrid, Spain, where he was the CIO and then Founding Director of the Medical Bioinformatics Department.   He has served as a Vice-President of the International Medical Informatics Association and as Co-Chair of the Scientific Program Committee for the last World Conference in Health and Biomedical Informatics, MEDINFO 2015. With more than 180 peer-reviewed publications, his research has been funded by some 35 grants from the European Commission, and main agencies from Spain, Australia and the USA. His research interests cover a wide range of topics related to informatics methods and systems in translational research (big data linkage and integration), precision medicine (genome and exposome data processing) and participatory health (social media, quantified-self).  He is a Fellow of ACMI (American College of Medical Informatics) and ACHI (Australasian College of Health Informatics, a Certified Health Informatician Australasia (CHIA) and an Honorary Professorial Fellow with the University of Melbourne’s Medical School.  He is the Editor-in-Chief of the new International Journal of Big Data and Analytics in Healthcare and is the current Chair of the IMIA Working Group on Data Mining and Big Data Analytics.

Raj Lakhanpal, MD, FRCS, FACEP is the Chief Executive Officer, SpectraMedix. Dr. Lakhanpal is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of SpectraMedix. SpectraMedix’s industry leading suite of clinical quality measurement and population health analytics solutions are utilized by a cross-section of  hospitals, health systems, provider organizations and health information exchanges to improve care and transition to new healthcare payment models. Raj brings proven experience developing business intelligence and data analytics solutions to SpectraMedix. Previously he founded HealthAtoZ, a top online wellness and population health management platform with deep analytics capabilities that assisted Health Plans and their Fortune 500 clients to reduce and manage their healthcare costs. HealthAtoZ was acquired by UnitedHealth Group in 2006.

Dr. Lakhanpal is a Member of the Clinical and Business Intelligence Committee of HIMSS, the preeminent healthcare IT association in the United States, is a Trustee of the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, and is on the Governance Board of the Medicaid Information Technology Architecture (MITA) initiative. A former emergency physician, he is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians in the US and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in the United Kingdom. He is a noted speaker, having presented on a range of healthcare IT industry topics at nationally recognized events including the Annual HIMSS Conference and Exhibition, the Wharton Health Care Business Conference, Health Datapalooza, the Mid-Atlantic Healthcare Informatics Symposium (presented by the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia) and the New Jersey Technology Council. Dr. Lakhanpal is also the founding President of TiE NJ-Philadelphia, a not for profit organization that fosters entrepreneurship across the globe, and a lifetime Member of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI).

Gregory S. Allen, MSW is the Director, Program Development and Management, Office of Health Insurance Programs, New York State Department of Health. As Director of the Division of Program Development and Management, Greg is responsible for Medicaid services planning and policy in addition to development of new and emerging program areas. Greg is responsible for managing policy and payment support for all NYS Medicaid’s inpatient, clinic, practitioner, transportation and pharmacy services as well as payment policy for mental health, chemical dependence and developmental disabilities services. Greg and his team have recently been engaged in the NYS Medicaid Redesign process including the statewide roll out of the health home care management program for high need, high cost populations. Greg also has lead responsibility for managing the state’s recently approved $8B Medicaid Waiver including its centerpieces the Delivery System Reform Incentive Payment (DSRIP) program and Value Based Payment (VBP).

Beginning his career as a front line service professional in the chemical dependence field, Greg has over 25 years of government operations and management experience. Working at both the State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services and more recently at the State Department of Health, most of Greg’s work has focused on the nexus between program development and payment with a particular focus on incubating new programs and policy.

John Hui is a serial entrepreneur and accredited angel investor in the healthcare industry. His sales, marketing and entrepreneurial experiences cover industry sectors of healthcare technology, clinical laboratory, diagnostic imaging, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, and medical tourism. His angel investment portfolio focuses on healthcare IT and medical diagnostic companies. 

John is a Co-Founder and Head of Strategy for Twiage, an award-winning mobile healthcare IT startup company that provides a novel pre-hospital triage and care coordination platform enabling hospitals and EMS to accelerate life-saving care. John has also been co-founders of Reliant Diagnostics, a radiology management company and Superus Health, an international healthcare consultancy. Prior to starting his own business, John has been an accomplished sales executive with Fortune 500 companies, such as LabCorp, Abbott and Schering-Plough.

John received his MBA from the Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University as a Fellow of the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Institute. He holds his BBA in Advertising from the Zicklin School of Business at Baruch College. He is the Chair of ACHE New Jersey Chapter’s Distinguish Service Award Committee and a member of Angel Capital Association’s Collaboration Committee.

Jan Oldenburg, FHIMSS is passionate about using digital tools to build a healthcare system where patients and caregivers participate as partners. She currently advises and mentors startups and consults with organizations who want to understand the evolving digital health landscape.

She has broad experience in all aspects of the healthcare ecosystem, including payers, providers, and integrated delivery systems. Ms. Oldenburg has been the Vice President of Patient and Physician Engagement in Aetna’s Accountable Care Solutions organization, worked as a senior leader in Kaiser Permanente’s Digital Services Group. Ms. Oldenburg has been a principal in several consulting companies focused on using the digital tools effectively in healthcare, as well as a senior manager at EY (formerly known as Ernst &Young). She is currently the Principal in Participatory Health Consulting.

She is a Past President of the Northern California HIMSS Chapter and the Co-Chair of the HIMSS Connected Health Committee. She is the primary editor of Participatory Healthcare: A Person-Centered Approach to Transforming Healthcare, published by CRC Press in June, 2016. She is also the primary editor of Engage! Transforming Healthcare Through Digital Patient Engagement, published by HIMSS press and winner of “Best Book of 2013” honors at HIMSS 2014. Ms. Oldenburg has also contributed Chapters to Medical Informatics: An Executive Primer, third edition, published in 2015 and The Journey Never Ends: Technology’s Role in Helping Perfect Healthcare Outcomes. Ms. Oldenburg is a frequent speaker and commentator on personal health and physician engagement issues; she tweets @janoldenburg. She received her BA degree in English and Philosophy from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa and completed coursework for a PhD in English at the University of Minnesota.
