The Dentistry and Oral Health Section at The New York Academy of Medicine was established to align with NYAM's mission of advancing urban healthcare and to serve as a platform for dental and medical professionals to convene and exchange ideas. The Dentistry and Oral Health Section cordially invites all Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) residents from the greater New York area to join us for this special event. We are honored to host Dr. Eric J. Dierks, MD, DMD, FACS, FACD, FRCS(Ed) as our guest lecturer.
Dr. Dierks is a graduate in both medicine and dentistry from the University of Louisville. His OMFS residency was done at the Christiana Medical Center of Delaware, and his Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery residency was completed at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School at Dallas. He is board-certified in both specialties. He served on the full-time ENT faculty at UT Southwestern for five years before moving to Portland Oregon. He is an Emeritus Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Oregon Health and Science University. He has published over 140 journal articles and book chapters in his areas of interest.
The 10 Commandments of Dysplasia:
Dr. Dierk's lecture is intended to be a purely clinical presentation that contains only one photomicrograph. The speaker draws from his 50 year experience diagnosing and managing dysplasia, which he once referred to as “the bane of my existence “. This is a pseudo-academic lecture in the sense that the pertinent literature is presented along with the speaker’s preferences and his interpretation of the literature, which is frequently conflicting. The speaker has given this lecture to OMFS and ENT audiences around the world and it is constantly updated so the current lecture may differ significantly from that given elsewhere several years ago.
The Emergency Surgical Airway: Its Prevention and Its Performance (the DEFCON Lecture) draws upon the speaker’s career - long interest and extensive experience in issues related to the failing airway and emergency cricothyroidotomy. The presentation is often humorous and occasionally frightening. It covers airway crises, both in the office sedation environment and in the hospital. The speaker has given this lecture around the world and it is constantly updated so the current lecture may differ significantly from that which may have been given elsewhere several years ago. Dr. Dierks has received a number of emails from previous course participants who have just saved a life by applying what they learned in this course.
