Dr. Jann Murray-García is a pediatrician, educator, public health leader, and health equity advocate whose work has transformed how health professionals engage with diverse communities. As a founding faculty member and clinical professor at the UC Davis Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing, she co-developed the concept of Cultural humility with Dr. Melanie Tervalon—a groundbreaking framework that has influenced healthcare education and practice around the world.
Throughout her distinguished career, Dr. Murray-García has championed health equity, anti-racism, and community-centered leadership, helping to shape a more compassionate and inclusive healthcare system through her scholarship, advocacy, and mentorship.

About the Award
The Alma Dea Morani, MD Renaissance Woman Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Women in Medicine Legacy Foundation, recognizes an outstanding contemporary pioneer in the medical sciences. It was named for Alma Dea Morani, MD, the first woman admitted to the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons and an advocate for humanism in medicine. Recipients demonstrate professional excellence, a thirst for knowledge, and service beyond their medical practice or scientific endeavors. Learn more about the award.

Jann Murray-García, MD, MPH
About Jann Murray-García, MD, MPH
Dr. Murray-García is a pediatrician and Health Sciences Clinical Professor Emerita at the UC Davis Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing. She co-founded with Dr. Melanie Tervalon and has written a textbook on the internationally recognized concept of Cultural Humility. Their textbook is due out later this year or in early 2027.
She has developed several highly-rated immersive experiences at UC Davis Health, including the 3-day Anti-Racism and Cultural Humility (ARC) Training Program for staff, faculty, and administrators, the 4 week Summer Institute on Race and Health, and the overnight Interprofessional Central Valley Road Trip, a 2-day intergenerational exploration of the diverse cultural histories and current population health challenges of this critically important region of the country.
Dr. Murray-García received her BA in Human Biology with Honors and with Distinction from Stanford University, her MD from UCSF, and completed pediatric residency training at Oakland Children’s Hospital, followed by an MPH from UC Berkeley. She is widely published in the health sciences literature.
Her greatest achievements are her marriage in 1992 to her boyfriend of 33 years, Dr. Jorge García, her three children and three grandchildren.
