The Fellows of the New York Academy of Medicine embody the highest levels of achievement and leadership in the fields of medicine and health as well as science, social work, nursing, education, law and research.

Fellows are an elite group of physicians, academicians and other health professionals of the utmost distinction who, taken together comprise a body of knowledge, expertise and commitment that is the foundation of NYAM's strength. They are leaders in thought, action and vision who have dedicated their lives and careers to working to improve the health of the public.

Dr. Jeffrey Levine Featured in The New York Times More...

Dr. Jeffrey Levine was featured on the New York Times blog The New Old Age on June 23. A photographer as well as geriatrician, Dr. Levine created a traveling photo exhibit entitled “Aging Though a Physician’s Lens” that was presented at NYAM last fall. The Times article includes a slideshow of Dr. Levine’s photographs and highlights his commitment to challenging stereotypes about aging, as well as inspiring medical students to specialize in geriatrics.

Steven Jonas, MD, MPH, MS Receives Yale Distinguished Alumnus Award for 2010 More...

On June 4, 2010, Steven Jonas, MD, MPH, MS, Professor of Preventive Medicine, School of Medicine and Professor, Graduate Program in Public Health, at Stony Brook University (NY), received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Yale School of Public Health, New Haven, CT., for 2010. Dr. Jonas received his Master of Public Health Degree from Yale in 1967.

Quoting in part from the text that accompanies the Award certificate, it was established by the Association of Yale Alumni in Public Health Board of Directors in 1988. It recognizes the contributions and achievements of alumni with distinguished careers in public health as outstanding teachers, researchers, or practitioners. For recognition with the Award, the achievement or contribution is to be beyond normal expectation, or a unique and innovative nature, with service to society that is continuous and sustaining, and fosters the development of new directions/initiatives or strengthens important priorities in public health practice and academic public health.

Dr. Jonas is a Fellow of the New York Academy of Sciences (elected), the Royal Society of Medicine (London), the American College of Preventive Medicine, the New York Academy of Medicine, and the American Public Health Association. He is Editor-in-Chief of the American Medical Athletics Association Journal. He is the recipient of the Founders Medal of the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (1982), the Duncan Clark Career Achievement Award of the Association for Prevention Teaching and Research (2006), and the Faculty Recognition Award of the Graduate Program in Public Health, Stony Brook University (2008). Over the course of an academic career that began in 1969, his research has focused on health policy analysis, preventive medicine and public health, and personal health and Wellness.

He has authored, co-authored, edited, and co-edited over 30 books, and published more than 135 papers in scientific journals. Educated and trained at Yale by Dr. E. Richard Weinerman and colleagues in health policy analysis, an example of his work in that realm is Jonas & Kovner's Health Care Delivery in the United States. When it was first published in 1977 by the Springer Publishing Co. of New York City, it was the first of its kind. A current book, for which Dr. Jonas is co-author, is ACSM’s Exercise is Medicine tm: A Clinician's Guide to the Exercise Prescription (Philadelphia, PA/London: Lippincott, Williams and Wilkins, 2009), the official textbook for ACSM's Exercise is Medicine® program (also the first of its kind).

In addition, he has published numerous articles and has had several regular columns in the lay press including his current one, in USA-Triathlon Life, primarily on exercise and sports. A triathlete in his 28th season, with 210-plus multi-sport races under his belt, and a certified ski instructor, he practices what he preaches. His personal website is www.ordinarymortals.net. He is married to Mrs. Chezna Newman of New York City and has two children of his own, Jacob Jonas and Lillian Wain, and a step-son, Mark Newman.

Robert Anderson, MD, Honored with The Joseph Addison Sewall Award More...

On May 28th the University of Colorado recognized Dr. Robert Anderson, NYAM's Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, for his exceptional contributions of leadership and vision to the health sciences by presenting him with The Joseph Addison Sewall Award. Dr. Anderson served 41 years at the University of Colorado Medical School before arriving at NYAM this year. We are fortunate to have him join us! Read more here.

Mikael Dolsten, M.D., PhD, is named President of Pfizer Worldwide Research and Development. More...

On May 26, 2010, Pfizer Inc. named NYAM Fellow Mikael Dolsten, M.D., PhD, President of Pfizer Worldwide Research and Development, as the Company completes its integration of these functions following the Wyeth acquisition. Dr. Dolsten previously led Wyeth's Research and Development organization from May 2008, and after the close of the Wyeth acquisition was named President of Pfizer's BioTherapeutics Research & Development. Patricia Volland Receives Life Time Achievement Award More...

The National Association of Social Workers - New York City Chapter Board of Directors has announced that it will present a Lifetime Achievement Award to Patricia J. Volland, NYAM Senior Vice President for Strategy and Business and Director of the Social Work Leadership Institute (SWLI). The award will be presented at the Association’s national meeting in New York on Thursday, May 13, 2010. The award recognizes Pat’s many contributions to the field of social work, her work in the area of care coordination, and her desire to strengthen the field through the Social Work Leadership Institute. NYAM Trustee Ed Lewis to be Inducted into Bronx "Walk of Fame" More...

On Sunday, May 23, 2010, NYAM Trustee Ed Lewis will be inducted into the Bronx “Walk of Fame” as part of a weekend-long celebration of the Bronx. Mr. Lewis grew up in the South Bronx area of New York City, attending DeWitt Clinton High School, where he received All-City honors as a fullback on the school's football team. After a brief career in banking, Mr. Lewis co-founded Essence Magazine and later went on to serve as Chairman and CEO of Essence Communications. Mr. Lewis joined the NYAM Board of Trustees in 2006. Past inductees into the "Walk of Fame" include Danny Aiello, Regis Philbin, Colin Powell, Rita Moreno, Diahann Carroll, and E.L. Doctorow.
