Nine Simple Solutions to Achieve Health Equity: A Guide for Healthcare Professionals and Patients by Dr. Beverley presents actionable strategies to transform health disparity into health equity. Drawing from her extensive interactions with over 1,000 diverse patients, Dr. Beverley introduces innovative approaches, like "The Bridge Team," to enhance outcomes for vulnerable populations. She truly believe this book is a game changer that will move the dial from health disparity to health equity for all populations. Through an emphasis on the African American/Black population, she shares innovative, sustainable, concepts like the “Bridge Team” and transformative "Stop in My Tracks" moments inspired by real patient stories that led to practical, boots-on-the-ground, solutions. What is most unique about her book is the active involvement of patients in developing these solutions.

About the Author 

Dr. Mauvareen Beverley an executive-level physician, with 20 years’ experience advocating for improving the patient engagement and cultural competence for all populations. As AVP, Physician Advisor for NYC Health + Hospitals, she developed the first Care management program at NYCH+H/Queens hospital with a focus on patients with SCD and developed the first Sickle Cell Support group which that is still in effect today. 
She sponsored the first Conference on Improving the Health of the Elderly Black Population. As Deputy Executive Director of Kings County Hospital, her team decreased Congestive Heart Failure readmission from 30% to 18.7% in less than 2 years. 
Dr. Beverley is a Fellow, New York Academy of Medicine (NYAM) and her Abstract “Health Disparities and Epidemics: “Perception vs. Reality" was selected for presentation at NYAM 12th Annual History of Medicine and Public Health Night. She received the Excellence in Medicine Award from the Bronx County Medical Society 2021.


About the Moderator

Dr. Oni Blackstock is recognized nationally as a thought leader in the arena of health equity. She is a primary care and HIV physician and the founder and Executive Director of Health Justice, a racial and health equity consulting firm that helps health care and public health organizations center anti-racism and equity in the workplace and reduce health inequities in the communities they serve. 
Before launching Health Justice, Dr. Blackstock served as Assistant Commissioner at the New York City Health Department, overseeing the City’s response to the HIV epidemic.  Preceding her tenure at the NYC Health Department, she was an assistant professor at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine where she conducted HIV clinical research focused on developing and testing interventions to promote engagement in HIV prevention and treatment for disproportionately impacted communities.  
Dr. Blackstock is passionate about ensuring that all individuals and communities have the resources and support they need to thrive and achieve optimal health and well-being.
