Special Reception in Honor of Newly Appointed Dean of Mailman School of Public Health

NEW YORK, June 18 – Dr. Jo Ivey Boufford, president of The New York Academy of Medicine, held a welcome reception for renowned health and aging expert Dr. Linda Fried June 17. The reception provided an opportunity for distinguished members of the health community to engage with Dr. Fried and learn more about her vision for public health in New York City and her plans as Dean of the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University.

Serving as the director of Johns Hopkins University’s Center on Aging and Health, Dr. Fried has pioneered numerous award-winning initiatives and programs. One of the programs she co-founded, Experience Corps, will soon be implemented in New York City. The community-based program promotes

better health for older volunteers by fostering physical and social activity through civic engagement with public school students. “Dr Fried is an outstanding scientist and practitioner of public health”, said Dr. Boufford.

In a showing of great respect and admiration Dr. Allan Rosenfield, Dean Emeritus Columbia University, Mailman School of Public Health, called Dr. Fried a “superstar” as he thanked her for accepting the nomination for dean.

While explaining her decision to leave Johns Hopkins University after 25 years Dr. Fried remarked, “I look at New York City and the extraordinary models you have been developing. I look at the Academy and the very important ways you are providing leadership as well as partnership in public health—particularly in urban health. I can’t think of a more exciting place to be and actually try to add my part.”

The New York Academy of Medicine (NYAM) has been advancing the health of people in cities since 1847. An independent organization, NYAM addresses the health challenges facing the world’s urban populations through interdisciplinary approaches to policy leadership, education, community engagement and innovative research. Drawing on the expertise of diverse partners worldwide and more than 2,000 elected Fellows from across the professions, our current priorities are to create environments in cities that support healthy aging; to strengthen systems that prevent disease and promote the public’s health; and to implement interventions that eliminate health disparities.
