Former Academy President and Trustee Duncan W. Clark, MD, was honored at the 2008 Annual Duncan W. Clark Lecture, which took place last night. Nearly one hundred fifty friends and family of Dr. Clark attended the event to celebrate his significant contributions to public health, preventive medicine and The New York Academy of Medicine. In “A Tribute to Duncan W. Clark, MD” Dr. Marvin Lieberman wrote, “Dr, Clark was an honored physician, a dedicated teacher and mentor, a distinguished scholar, a tireless advocate for the improvement of medical education, a formidable fighter for advances in public health, and an enthusiastic volunteer for many causes and organizations. Of the organizations he served so well, there was no greater beneficiary of his devotion than The New York Academy of Medicine.” You may view the Tribute, which guests received here:

“Dr. Clark was committed to improving community health and focusing on preventive medicine in medical school education. I am so pleased to celebrate and honor the life of a distinguished friend and colleague of all of us here at the Academy,” said Academy President Jo Ivey Boufford, MD.

In the long tradition of displaying portraits of Academy presidents, we were delighted to receive a portrait of Dr. Clark commissioned by the International Foundation and painted by Neill Slaughter. William M. McCormack, MD, Chief of Infectious Diseases at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, a trustee of the Foundation, and a long time friend of Dr. Clark’s presented the portrait to Dr. Boufford.

Mrs. Ida Clark, expressed her deep appreciation to the Academy and the many friends who where in attendance. She thanked the International Foundation for their generous gift to the Academy fund that supports the Annual Duncan W. Clark Lecture. Also in attendance were his son Duncan Clark, Jr., with his wife Carol and their son, and his daughter Carol McMullen with her husband George and their two children.
