VINCENT GIORDANO, M.S.

Vincent Giordano has joined The New York Academy of Medicine, Office of School Health Programs as a Senior Consultant for Health and Education Policy. Mr. Giordano will provide technical and consultative services to assist with policy development, planning and implementation of programs designed for the New York City Department of Education. Additionally, he will be involved in the identification and collaboration with new federal, state, city, nonprofit and community based organization funding streams.

Prior to joining the Office of School Health Programs, Mr. Giordano served as the Executive Director of the Division of Student Support Services for the New York City Department of Education where he was responsible for ensuring that over 1,100 schools were provided with resources, technical assistance and professional development to address the myriad of problems facing over one million students in the largest urban school system in the country. As Executive Director he was charged with developing policy and procedures related to all student support services including guidance/counseling, comprehensive health/mental health education and services, attendance, safety/discipline, child abuse prevention, and substance abuse prevention.

Mr. Giordano received his Master’s Degree in Education from Fordham University and his Certification as a School District Administrator from Hunter College. He began his career in 1968 as a caseworker with the NYC Department of Social Services and from 1971 to 1987 he held a number of positions with the NYS Office of Alcoholism and Substances Abuse Services ranging from parole officer to Director of Prevention Services. He joined the New York City Board of Education in 1987. He has been invited to make presentations both locally and nationally on topics relating to the provision and coordination of student centered support services. He is the recipient of many honors and awards and has served on numerous advisory boards dealing with the health, mental health and emotional issues of students.
