John Guidry
John A. Guidry is Associate Director for Research with the Division of Public Health and the Center for the Advancement of Collaborative Strategies in Health at The New York Academy of Medicine. John grew up in New Orleans and attended Loyola and Tulane Universities. In 1996, he received the doctorate in political science from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. Prior to joining the Academy, he was a professor of political science at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois (1996-2003), and Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota (2003-2004). His past research has concentrated on the ways in which community organizations and the movement for children’s rights in Brazil help poor and marginalized persons gain access to their citizenship rights. He has also studied the innovative “participatory budgeting” policy at the municipal level in Brazil. His work has been published in academic journals, books, and encyclopedias. With Michael Kennedy and Mayer Zald, Dr. Guidry was editor and contributor to Globalizations and Social Movements, which was published by the University of Michigan Press in 2000. He is a member of the Social Science Research Council’s Working Group on Youth, Law, and Globalization and is on the Advisory Editorial Board of Sociological Quarterly.
