Planned Giving

Those who include the Academy in their estate planning help to ensure a future for vital programs that foster research benefiting the health of entire populations, provide quality training and continuing education of health professionals, and strengthen services to help individuals and families in need of medical care, especially the underserved.

Following is a brief overview of ways in which planned gifts may be made to the Academy. You should consult your own tax and legal advisors for a full discussion of the tax implications of particular gift plans.

Bequests - Provisions made through a Will to the Academy may be unrestricted or designated by you for a specific purpose. Your gift may establish a named fund to support a program of special interest to you, endow a senior staff position, or name a room in the Academy building on Fifth Avenue. Individuals who make provisions for the Academy in their Wills and estate plans receive special recognition from the Academy as members of the John Stearns Society.

Gifts of Life Insurance and Pension Plans - A gift of life insurance is similar to a bequest. You may name the Academy as a beneficiary of your insurance policy or policies, or of an IRA or KEOGH plan. The Academy may also be named as the contingent beneficiary of such policies or plans in the event that the primary beneficiary or beneficiaries predecease you.

Charitable Trusts - Creating a Charitable Trust allows you to provide for both the Academy and for your loved ones. The Academy may be the beneficiary of a Charitable Lead Annuity Trust, Charitable Lead Unitrust, or a Charitable Remainder Trust.

Planned gifts may be made on an Unrestricted or Restricted basis. Unrestricted Gifts help support the development of new Academy programs, and the operations of the Academy's research divisions, education programs, community-based service programs benefiting individuals in need, or the Academy Library. Restricted Gifts may be earmarked by you for use by one of the Academy's main divisions; for the David E. Rogers Fellowship Program; the Library; or for another, mutually agreed upon purpose. You may also specify that your gift be restricted to the Academy's Endowment Fund.

Naming Opportunities - Opportunities for public recognition of your planned gift are available. Recognition may be made in your name, or in those of family members, colleagues, or friends, and be applied to education and conference spaces, or research facilities. Endowments may also be created to name the Academy Research Divisions, the Library, or endow and name senior staff positions.
