The Center for Urban Epidemiologic Studies
Project VIVA
The Center for Urban Epidemiologic Studies (CUES) is a research unit that uses epidemiology and social sciences to identify opportunities to improve the health of urban populations and reduce health disparities. To accomplish this, CUES builds basic public health science, works with communities to translate those findings into interventions, and then develops and evaluates those interventions that have the greatest potential for scale-up and sustainability.

CUES is a research consortium established by The New York Academy of Medicine in partnership with the New York City Department of Health. Community residents and organizations help to identify vital research needs. Through an array of interventions and studies, CUES is working to bring about a better understanding of diseases and other threats to health concentrated in urban areas.

Today, CUES conducts a wide range of studies geared at disease prevention and educating communities on health risks. These studies demonstrate new and innovative approaches to research as they address many of the health problems present in today’s society. Current studies address HIV and other infectious diseases, substance abuse, asthma, the role of social determinants of health, and acute cardiac arrest. See our list of projects.

Collaborative relationships with public agencies, professional organizations, research universities, and social service institutions are also fundamental to the work of CUES. See our list of partners.
