Background:

The New York Academy of Medicine (NYAM) has been advancing the health of people in cities since 1847. An independent organization, NYAM addresses the health challenges facing the world’s urban populations through interdisciplinary approaches to policy leadership, education, community engagement and innovative research. Drawing on the expertise of diverse partners worldwide and more than 2,000 elected Fellows from across the professions, our current priorities are to create environments in cities that support healthy aging; to strengthen systems that prevent disease and promote the public’s health; and to implement interventions that eliminate health disparities.

Summary:

The Conference Center comprises 17,000+ square feet of event space hosting over 20,000 attendees annually. The Center directs NYAM's continuing medical education (CME) program, accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME.) and provides full-service event logistical planning, catering and support to NYAM departments, Fellows, external partners and clients, with special regard to community-based organizations, in East Harlem and throughout the city.

The New York Academy of Medicine seeks a dynamic, experienced Director for its Conference Center. Candidates should have a proven track record of success in managing and marketing conference center facilities. Excellent customer service, communication, organization and supervisory skills required.

Reporting to the Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration, the Director will oversee The Conference Center's multi-purpose function, event and conference space. The Center hosts hundreds of events each year sponsored by NYAM programs as well as a variety of external organizations. Events are scheduled 7 days a week during the day and in the evening and can range in size from 10 to 500 persons.

Key Elements and Requirements Include:

• Conference center management experience with enthusiastic, hands-on, results oriented management style

• Effective planner and problem solver with a proven history of developing creative, logical solutions that increase efficiency

• Strong commitment and experience in providing excellent customer service

• Entrepreneurial skills

• Experience in planning, marketing and promoting use of conference center facilities

• Budget and financial management expertise and experience in identifying cost efficiencies

• Highly organized, team oriented manager with experience in training and cross training employees

• Systems orientation and experience using software tools to manage space, resource utilization, event registration, budgeting and financial management

• Excellent written and verbal communications skills

• Ability to maintain ACCME accreditation for the NYAM Continuing Medical Education (CME) program

• Coordination of NYAM client needs with NYAM’s catering partner

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree with 5-7 years of relevant, progressively responsible experience in conference center/hospitality management, marketing and meeting planning is required. Minimum three years supervisory experience. A Masters Degree is preferred. Experience working with non-profit organizations desirable. Strong computer knowledge and skills required.
